Developers Talk About How They Plan To Use DualSense’s Features For Their Upcoming Games

Today, Sony Interactive Entertainment released the first global ad spot for PlayStation 5. It’s the first time that Sony has released anything new about the next-gen console since the Future of Gaming Event which officially revealed the PlayStation 5 and several games in development for the system. The ad was focused on some of the new features that come with PlayStation 5 and the new PlayStation controller, DualSense. Along with the new ad, several developers also talked about how they plan to use the new features that come with DualSense and how gaming will change going into the next generation.

One of the biggest games that were revealed during the PS5 event was Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a followup to Marvel’s Spider-Man released in 2018. Creative Director Brian Horton touched on what features of the DualSense Insomniac is using for the game coming out later this year. “The haptic feedback precision allows us to do all sorts of new things. “In Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, we’ll be hinting to players which direction attacks are coming from by providing haptic feedback from the appropriate direction on the DualSense wireless controller. Because of the high resolution of DualSense wireless controller’s haptics system, we can really push the dimensionality of the feedback. For instance, as you hold down Square to do a Venom Punch, you feel Spider-Man’s bio-electricity crackle from the left side of the controller, culminating in the right side on impact.”

Dinga Bakaba, Game Director for Deathloop talked about how the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback will allow them to make the different guns feel different and can prompt players in a physical, more interactive when something happens instead of an animation playing, such as letting the player know that their gun has jammed.

Mathis de Jonge, Game Director, Guerilla, Marcus Smith, Creative Director, Insomniac Games, and more also talked about how the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers allow for a deeper sense of immersion and the ability to really make weapons feel more unique than ever before for their respective games.

Another big reveal out of the PS5 event was the Demon’s Souls remake developed by Bluepoint Games who did the Shadow of Colossus Remake. “With the DualSense wireless controller and the power of haptics, we can make the combat [in Demon’s Souls] feel grittier, darker, and deadlier,” Gavin Moore, Creative Director, SIE Japan Studio said. “Now you feel every blow as you strike down your enemies and cast each spell. You’ll experience the force of a titanic boss’ attack as you pull off a well-timed guard. Metal strikes metal when your foes block your attacks or you block theirs. That extra sensory feedback through the controller allows you to know your attack hit home and your perfectly-timed parry was a success, so you can react faster and more decisively.”
