Freedom Fighters Is Coming Back to PC After 17 Years

17 years after its initial release, the cult classic game Freedom Fighters is seeing re-release on PC. As of today, the game is now avalible to download on Steam, GOG, and the Epic GameStore for 33% (making it $9.89 USD) off during its release week. Along with the game being purchased during the week of its release, buyers will also get bonus content and the complete soundtrack (with two new tracks).

As the original release was available on PC,  PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube, the game has also received a new rating from PEGI for its PC version. The gameplay showed itself to be well received with fans and critics alike, with the only critique of the title being that it never has that much of story, it never seemed enough to spawn a new series past the first title. The game’s story mode revolves around squad-based shooting set in an alternate reality where the Soviet Union ended World War 2 by nuking Berlin. IOI lists the game as you

taking on the role of Chris Stone, a hard-working plumber who must rise through the ranks of the resistance to prove himself a charaismatic leader. As Chris, you’ll liberate New York from invaders in tactical shootouts with your squad of 12 scrappy fighters.

Freedom Fighters was originally published by Electronic Arts, but IO soon received the rights to the title after the studio was acquired by Eidos Interactive (which was then acquired by Square Enix). In 2017, IO Interactive became an independent studio and took Freedom Fighters with it. As fans of the game have not seen it since its release (because the studio was working on the Hitman franchise), hope that a newly remastered version would come when the announcement that IO Interactive opened a second studio, saying that it would help “expand our muscles for creating brand-new and exciting endeavors, new universes, and new franchises.”
