Yemoja, Goddess of Rivers, Joins the Smite Roster

The cast of Smite keeps growing and dosen’t seem to stop. A new God is approaching the battlefield and she will be providing a strong amount of focus on utility then most have seen with past releases. With 5 water flailing abilities, no cooldowns, and a special new mana type, support players are likely going to have a lot of fun saving lives with this new guardian.

Yemoja, Goddess of Rivers is the newest arrival to Smite. Yemoja brings a vibrant and diverse look to the cast of Smite as she belongs to the African lore similar to Olorun. “The visual iterations on this goddess involved many explorations of African Clothing, mostly using modern Nigerian attire as a reference. This includes formal robes fused with characteristics from her lore.” Most depictions show her as a mermaid but developers felt keeping her in a humanoid form would help them achieve their goals.

Yemoja has a skillset focuses heavily on supporting and healing her allies. She is the first character whose auto-attack shoots in an AOE line that gives a heal over time buff to allies. She also uses a new type of Mana called Omni that regenerates much quicker.  Her 1st ability has 2 forms called Bouncing Bubble and Moonstrike. When cast the first time, a bubble will plop three times in front of her causing damages then bursting into multiple bubbles on the last bounce. This will then turn into another ability that can be cast. This ability cast pillars of water down in a horizontal line in front of her. Enemies that are hit by the center of the ability will be stunned. Her second ability Mending Waters shoots out a  blast of water that damages enemies and gives a heal and shield to allies. Her third ability Riptide creates a standing vortex that can be used to propel allies out of danger or enemies into it. Her ultimate is called River’s Rebuke and looks a lot like the parting of the sea if familiar with the story of Moses. Two waves form parallel to each other stopping movement and projectiles before crashing together causing damage, tremble, and a slow.

Yemoja is the perfect guardian for someone who solely wants to sit in the back and assist their team. Her kit will prove best when playing safe and supporting allies rather than focusing on damage. Smite is free to play on PS4, PC, and Switch and Yemoja is available on test servers now, and will later be released for everyone.

Nathan Arquiette: Mom and Dad would never buy me a gaming console growing up, so I bought my own Dreamcast when I was 10 years old. Ever since then my passion for gaming went wild. Why watch a movie or read a book when you can take part in the plot playing a game was my philosophy. "Video games rot your brain" but I had a 10th grade reading level in the 6th grade all thanks to RPG's. Talking and writing about games is something I will never get tired of.
