Today, Ubisoft has revealed a new, free-to-play multiplayer competitive shooter called Tom Clancy’s XDefiant. The game is coming to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Ubisoft Connect, Luna, and Stadia. Full cross-play will be available at launch. XDefiant features customizable characters known as Defiants for players to choose from. The characters come from multiple Clancy franchises. At launch, the game will have four factions: the Wolves from Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon, Echelon from Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, and the Outcasts and Cleaners from Tom Clancy’s The Division. In addition, the different factions represent different classes. The Wolves are the Tank class, the Echelon is the Support class, the Cleaners are the Assault class, and the Outcasts are the Healer class. Matches take place across a variety of maps featuring 6v6 arena battles and objective-based game modes such as Team Deathmatch, Domination, and Escort.
Defiants can be personalized to match playstyles. Players can choose a faction with unique traits, abilities, and ultra before choosing a primary and secondary weapon, attachments, and a device to complete their loadout. Loadouts can be altered while respawning so players can adapt and adjust if they need to. Abilities, traits, and ultras can provide useful advantages but the devs led by Executive Producer Mark Rubin and Creative Director Jason Schroeder at Ubisoft San Francisco are making sure that XDefiant’s gameplay is focused first and foremost on gunplay.
Anyone interested in playing Tom Clancy’s XDefiant as soon as possible can register now on the game’s official website for a chance to play early. PC players in the US and Canada will have the first opportunity on August 5. Tests in other regions will roll out afterward.
