The developers of The Almost Gone, Happy Volcano, recently released their newest updates for all of their platforms. Some of the new updates include added features that may help with boosting the in-game experience: scaling up in-game text, choosing between swipe and button controls, highlighting items, providing a map for each area, adjusting the screen and device orientation (right/left), swiping over the entire width of the screen to rotate tiles and over the entire screen when movement is handled by buttons, and a few other bug fixes.
Now, this information is incomprehensible for those who are unfamiliar with the game. The Almost Gone is a puzzle/point game where users will uncover the events that led to a character’s fate. In simple words, the character is in the midst of discovering her life and death through various puzzles. These puzzles are contextualized in 3D dioramas/environments users can rotate to find the next set of hints that are essential to proceed to the next stage. Some of these items will also be kept in the inventory for future use. Whether it is a meter in a wedding cake to small numbers on a wall, having a keen eye seems essential to clearing each stage. The main goal is, therefore, to discover these items by independently uncovering each problem without receiving too many solutions.
“As we talk about pretty heavy stuff in the game, we’ve made sure to never make it too explicit.” stated in an interview with The Almost Gone’s Creative Director, David Prinsmel. “The subjects are present in the main character’s life, but we don’t try to give a solution or answer to any of them. She discovers them along with the player, it’s like she matures a couple of years in a couple of hours. That’s the goal of this world, it’s helping you understand. Because we’re never explicit, players will get to piece the story together themselves and come up with theories about what really happened.”
