Return Of The Obra Dinn From The Creator Of Papers, Please

Creator of the award-winning indie game Papers, Please, Lucas Pope, has announced a few details on twitter and the forum for his next 3D first person mystery game called Return of the Obra Dinn.

Below you can see the tweet from Pope mentioning that Return of the Obra Dinn will also be a black and white 1-bit rendering game that will be built with Unity 3D.

The game will be on an East India Company merchant ship named the Obra Dinn, you are in the year 1808 and you have just set out from London for “the Orient” with over 200 tons of trade goods. Though no one has seen Obra Dinn, which was lost at sea for six years prior, just mysteriously shows up at port, which you notice that there is no crew and damaged sails. Players will become an insurance adjustor for the East India Company’s London Office, while you seek out the captain’s logbook for assessment.

“I’m hoping to capture a compelling mystery with suspense and twists in the limited space of an old merchant sailing ship,” Pope said. “It won’t be the typical ‘collect items and look for clues’ structure. There’s a slightly cool gameplay hook but I won’t go into details on that until much later.”

Pope says that this game will be different from his previous games, plus a game that would challenge him and mentions on the forum that, “There’ll be less creativity with the gameplay and instead I want to experiment with the rendering, story, and a few technical features.”
