Red Barrels Announces The Outlast Trials, a New Multiplayer Horror Game

Red Barrels is at it again with a brand new project to ensure that we’re scared out of our minds. The developer has announced a brand new title, The Outlast Trialsa multiplayer game set within the world of their most well known franchise, Outlast. The game will take four players and put them together in a co-op experience where they will try and survive some pretty terrifying ordeals.

According to the developer, the game is not a sequel to the most recent title in the franchise, Outlast 2. It does however take place in the same universe, so we’re more than likely in store for some intense jump scares along with the series trademark creepy atmosphere that makes your skin crawl. Furthering the plot, the game takes place during the Cold War, where the four players are test subjects in an experiment that would probably fail some safety audits to say the least.

Despite being advertised as a multiplayer game, Red Barrels states that you can actually play through this whole experience on your own. This may have been done to keep the tried and true Outlast fans that prefer the single player aspect satisfied, but it’s still a nice option for them to add here. While they did not elaborate on what the actual trials would be, the promotional art alone elicits some feeling of discomfort, foreshadowing what you and your lucky friends get to partake in.

As for the games progress, the studio stated in the post that The Outlast Trials is “still in production.” With not a lot to show at this time, it’s safe to assume that the game is still early in its development, and we more than likely won’t be hearing too much about this for a while. This will be the third game in the Outlast franchise which started back in 2013. The original title made some waves in the community, mostly for it’s excellent execution for actually scaring the players. While the sequel, Outlast 2, wasn’t as well received, it still continued to push the franchise to new heights. While no official system was announced for The Outlast Trials, it could be released on multiple platforms.
