Platinum Games Teases Fifth Announcement After April Fools Reveal

After their April Fools Joke reveal, Platinum Games is now teasing yet another announcement as part of their recent Platinum 4 series. After the “reveal” on April 1, the company attempted to reassure its fans with “Bonus Stage coming soon” tweet. Apparently, the company couldn’t help themselves with the obligatory April Fools theme of the day and after teasing the 4th reveal last week, the company showed off their new game, which was a joke trailer for a new arcade game, and a new arcade machine to boot.

Platinum Games Director Hideki Kamiya later tweeted about the gag, stating that “While I’m aware that we’re living in troubled times, as an entertainer there’s a part of me that just wants to cheer you all up, even if it’s just a little.” Kamiya continued with a big thank you to the studio who developed the faux trailer for the non-existent game as well as describing his and Platinum’s humor on the subject “And a big thank you goes out to the folks at Hamster for their cooperation. I’ve always had my own rules about April Fools’ jokes such as ‘make it obvious that it’s a lie’ and ‘make sure it doesn’t disappoint even if they know it’s a lie’ and so on. However, this time it was ‘make something that will get us (me?) excited’ and we went full stupid with it. I hope that you were able to get a good laugh and remind yourself that this is Platinum Games.”

Considering that it was April Fools day, and the fact that they weren’t the only studios to make their own fake announcements and trailers, it’s safe to say that the fans will probably let this one go. The company has now promised that a true reveal will take place at some point, but for now we’ll just have to wait on it. As for what the unveiling will entail, that remains quite the mystery, especially since the previous three have all been fairly surprising thus far.

It started when the studio received massive influx of capital funds from video game powerhouse Tencent. This allowed Platinum to explore self-publishing, and soon after announced the Platinum 4, series of subsequent reveals over the course of a few months. The first of these was a full remaster of the unsung hero of the Nintendo Wii U, The Wonderful 101, which now has a release date of May 19. This was followed by a brand new, self-published IP with the working title Project G.G.

Then, Platinum threw a swerve at us by announcing that they have opened second studio in Tokyo, Japan. However, this new studio wouldn’t be the standard development one, instead focusing on the Games as a Service model. Platinum hasn’t stated much beyond that, so it will be interesting to see what they do with this new venture. Then there’s the 4th, now 5th announcement. It’s up in the air at this point, and knowing Platinum it could be anything. Whether it be another remaster, or another new IP, all eyes are the company as we eagerly await the next their next reveal.
