Google Clarifies Streaming In 4k On Stadia

Ever since Stadia was revealed, many gamers were left wondering if Google’s streaming service would work. Google promised lot, but based on the lukewarm reception at launch and the fact that some of the things that were promised aren’t available at launch, many are wondering if Google’s foray into gaming was a good idea. One of the things that’s been discovered since the launch of Stadia is the fact that some Stadia games aren’t streaming at true 4k resolution as was promised. Now, Google has clarified that it is up to the developers to make their games available to stream at 4k 60 FPS.

Two games that don’t stream in 4k are Destiny 2 and Red Dead Redemption II. On other platforms, 4k is available but Stadia renders Destiny 2 at 1080p and Red Dead Redemption II at 1440p and upscales them to 4k.

Speaking to 9to5Google, a spokesperson said “Stadia streams at 4k and 60 FPS – and that includes all aspects of our graphics pipeline from game to screen: GPU, encoder and Chromecast Ultra all outputting at 4k to 4k TVs, with the appropriate internet connection. Developers making Stadia gams work hard to deliver the best streaming experience for every game. Like you see on all platforms, this includes a variety of techniques to achieve the best overall quality. We give developers the freedom of how to achieve the best image quality and frame rate on Stadia and we are impressed with what they have been able to achieve for day one.”

The spokesperson concluded their statement with “we expect that many developers can, and in most cases will, continue to improve their games on Stadia. And because Stadia lives in our data centers, developers are able to innovate quickly while delivering even better experiences directly to you without the need for game patches or downloads.”
