In school, students may remember one book that was required for English class: Animal Farm. Written by George Orwell, Animal Farm has continued to be a popular read by students in the United States. Fast forward 75 years later, the book will receive its very own single-player game. Developed by indie game developer Nerial and published by Co-founders of Bossa Studios (who also called themselves The Dairymen) Imre Jele and Andy Payne, the game will be available on all mobile titles and Steam sometime in August 2020. There is no set price yet, but there has been some information released by the publishers as of today.
In a brief summary, Animal Farm is a story of a group of animals that rebel against their human farmer to develop an environment where they are treated fairly and happily. The game revolves around this storyline and will be “an adventure game that immerses players in Orwell’s story.” — stated in The Dairymen press release on Gamasutra. “By choosing which of the animals’ wishes they follow – and who is ignored or sidelined – gamers will influence the critical events that define the fate of the farm.”
In addition, players will also “devise strategies to balance resources, defend the farm, and keep the animal population happy. With its evocative 1930s painterly graphics, Animal Farm puts the player at the center of an allegorical revolution and enables them to experience firsthand the corrupting nature of power” — also stated on Gamusutra’s website. Therefore, players will be given the jurisdiction to decide which animals are to be “the most equal” of them all. With much going on the world today, Animal Farm may provide players with an interesting outlook of power by immersing themselves through the lens of Orwell’s vision from the book.
