Cuphead Reaches 2 Million Copies Sold

Chad and Jared Moldenhauer are brothers and co-founders of Studio MDHR. The small Canadian studio made headlines this year with the release and runaway success of their first title Cuphead.

The game initially received attention at E3 this year for stunning art design meant to mimic the cartoons of the 1930s, but it kept everyone’s attention after it was released for being notoriously difficult and a lot of fun. That popularity carried the game to one million copies sold within the first two weeks of its release.

This week they hit a new milestone – Cuphead has gone double platinum. The brother’s announced on their developer blog that the game has officially reached two million copies sold across all platforms. They thank their fans and express their disbelief that their game made it this far. “Even in our wildest dreams, we never thought our crazy little characters would be embraced by this many fans from around the world and we are continuously humbled by your support.”

If you’ve managed to avoid any news about the game here are the basics: players take control of Cuphead and his brother Mugman as they fight to regain the rights to their souls from the Devil himself by traveling the world and taking up the soul contracts of his other debtors. The run and gun fast paced gameplay focuses largely on a series of boss fights. Each one is unique and more challenging than the last. It can be played as a solo adventure, or on local co-op with a friend.

As of now, there has been no official word on a sequel, but given it’s commercial and critical success and the passion the team has for the project, prospects seem good.

Cuphead even landed a spot on our own best games of 2017 list. You can pick it up for PC or Xbox One for just $19.99.
