Dogs. There are so many different types of them, and somehow all of them manage to be appealing in some way. Who wouldn’t play a video game based around taking care of your very own furry friend? If you’re looking for one, look no further – Best Friend Forever is here.

Best Friend Forever is the first title of game development studio Starcolt, who says that they “deal in feels”.  If you really are looking for feels, look no further than BFF. The dog care/dating sim hybrid is designed around taking care of your own dog and getting to know the diverse cast of characters. There’s no shortage of activities – whether you’re scheduling the week (with your dog), meeting new people (with your dog), or exploring new places (with your dog). Your canid friend even interacts with the narrative as your progress, creating new outcomes within the story.

Best Friend Forever was first revealed in August 2019 at Gamescom, slated for a release on Valentine’s Day 2020 (February 14) on Steam and the Nintendo Switch. Then, in an announcement  Starcolt made on the game’s Steam page, the game was delayed to June 2020, with the team citing, “Shipping during a pandemic was never going to be easy, and we simply couldn’t have predicted what a global impact this was going to have, not to mention the impact on our psyches and home lives as we all worked from home. We want to thank you for all your support and encouragement you’ve given us so far, and ask you to stick with us a little longer as we get these good pups out the door, awaiting your virtual adoption.” The new release date was set for June 18, and things moved along.

But on June 16, another announcement, this time directly from the Starcolt website. “The unfortunate news is that due to circumstances outside our control, we have to delay the release of Best Friend Forever slightly further – this shouldn’t be for too long, but we don’t want to give you a date until we’re certain it’s the final, 100% certain date because we want to give you the game as much as you want to play it! Stay tuned for the new date, which will be announced soon through all our social channels and mailing lists.”

For fans who are desperate to give the game a go, there’s still hope – Starcolt released a playable demo for the game for Windows on Steam for the Steam Summer Games Festival. While the game’s full release may still be a few months away, you can still tide yourself over with this small slice of dog and dating goodness.
