Xbox Fitness Trailer Released

Microsoft recently posted a trailer for Xbox Fitness on the Xbox Youtube channel. Notable listed features include advanced Kinect monitoring, celebrity trainers, and name-brand workouts.

While Wii Fit and a smattering of Xbox 360 Kinect fitness games offered feedback and progress monitoring on some calisthenic routines, Xbox Fitness looks like it’s trying to take things to the next level. A paragraph taken from the web page says:

Introducing the future of fitness. Experience the world’s best workouts with instant, personalized feedback, right in your home on Xbox Fitness. Train with Jillian Michaels, Tracy Anderson, P90X, Insanity and more. Optimize every workout with immediate feedback on your form, power and heart rate with the all new Kinect, featuring Muscle Mapping, Power Gauge, and Pulse. Plus, feed your motivation with social challenges. Unlimited access is yours with an Xbox Live Gold membership through November 2014. Only on Xbox One.*

See that asterisk there? That refers to this:

*Some Xbox Fitness content may not be available with Xbox Live Gold, and may vary over time. After November 2014, unlimited access requires a paid Xbox Fitness Pass subscription and an Xbox Live Gold membership (both sold separately). See xbox.com/xboxfitness.

In exchange for recognizable names, Microsoft is charging a premium price. While it’s currently unknown what you get in the base game or what ‘unlimited access’ entails, two subscription fees are going to rub some people the wrong way. Whether Xbox Fitness will be worthy of the cost remains to be seen, but if it’s so good it replaces your gym membership then it could be a steal for people looking to get into shape without leaving the comfort of their hovel.
