Lot’s of less than stellar news has come out of the WWE world recently, but for WWE 2K players, this one may hit close to home. WWE 2K20 was released last year to a really bad reception, as the game was riddled with glitches and gameplay issues. Now, former WWE 2K narrative lead Justin Leeper has released a YouTube video sharing inside details about the potential cancellation of WWE 2K21.
He describes the potential cancellation as “bad news” when tweeting the video, but shares how this can actually be a blessing in disguise. Namely, that 2K Sports now has an extra year to develop their next WWE 2K and flesh it out. Leeper also touches on a potentially new WWE game coming from 2K Sports that is independent of its WWE 2K franchise. He chooses not to reveal too much, but does says the game will not be developed by Visual Concepts. 2K Sports and Visual Concepts have worked together on the WWE 2K series since WWE 2K14.
Speaking of the WWE 2K series, Leeper revealed more information from his “reliable sources” about when the series could return in 2021. Much to his disappointment, it appears the game will not be developed for next generation consoles. If 2K Sports truly is focused on developing the next WWE 2K for the following year, it would make sense that they’d have to tailor it to current gen. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are set to come out later this year, and without that system information it’d be impossible to start next gen development right now. Don’t feel too down though, it’s still possible that Leeper’s revelations may not come fruition; we’ll have to wait and see.
