Cat Girl Without Salad! is an April Fool’s joke by indie game developer WayForward that dates back to 2013. In the original joke post, the game was described as being a “puzzler, platformer, shmup, action, shooter, adventure, strategy, fighting, rhythm, arcade, horror, tactical, RPG, TPS, RTS, and visual novel.” The game was also said to be “exclusively” for the Nintendo 3DS, DS, Wii, WiiU, XBLA, PSN, PC, Vita, iOS, and Android. This April Fool’s joke is going to become a reality as WayForward is actually making the running gag into a reality.

The game was announced as a Humblebundle exclusive to be released with this month’s humble bundle. Humblebundle is a monthly subscription service providing a variety of games to its subscribers. The subscription is $12 a month; 5 percent of which is donated to charity. The release of the game was announced on the twitter page for Humblebundle with an image poking fun at the originally fake status of the game.
The game is set to follow Kebako, the female space bounty hunter/four-star chef and her calamari friends, the “Calamarites” fighting against a clan of cats referred to as the “NekoNekoNeko Clan.” The art for Kebako was designed by Lindsay Collins, a character designer known for her work on Teenage Pokemon. The game’s aesthetic, as well as its plot, seem like equal parts parody and homage to classic Japanese video games. What is known about the game so far is that voice actress Cristina Vee is going to be lending her voice talents to the game. Vee is known for her work on various English anime dubs such as Sailor Moon, Squid Girl, Puella Madoka Magica, and K-On!

Despite originally being little more than a joke, the game built a pretty solid fan base, even inspiring a soundtrack made for the ex-fictional game, as well as a decent amount of fan art. The game has already built some hype around the fan base and more information about the game is going to be released but at the moment it has not been confirmed whether or not the game will be all that it originally facetiously promised to be.
