Virtual Reality Fishing Simulator Monster of the Deep: Final Fantasy XV Out Now

Square Enix is taking players back to Final Fantasy XV‘s world of Eos not through a sequel, but with a virtual reality fishing simulator titled Monster of the Deep: Final Fantasy XV, which released today on PlayStation VR.

The simulator puts user created characters into the action, with FFXV‘s protagonist, Noctis, and party members Gladiolus, Ignis and Prompto filling supporting roles in the title. Monster of the Deep tasks players with a story mode fishing and hunting down the titular creature with a crossbow from a first person perspective. Alternatively, players can take a more traditional route through the free fishing mode without any of the aquatic combat. Bounties, equipment customization, tournaments and leaderboards round out the game’s offerings.

As bizarre as the project sounds, the official Final Fantasy Twitter account posted an even stranger trailer today parodying informercials. The trailer pokes fun at the game’s premise, as the narrator plays up indoor nature of the simulator.

“Fishing is a time honored sport,” the narrator began, “but who loves fumbling with all the expensive equipment, biting bugs, and being outside?” Following this question, the narrator also mentions that Monster of the Deep “is the immersive fantasy RPG VR fishing experience you’ve always wanted” and the game’s over 100 different species.

However, Monster of the Deep is not the first VR extension of FFXV. A FFXV VR experience was shown during E3 2016 that put players into Prompto’s shoes during battle. The Prompto-heavy content was originally intended to release after FFXV‘s main launch, but Square Enix later stated the mode was nothing more than a tech demo.

While Monster of the Deep is a standalone entry, the main FFXV software has seen multiple DLC episodes, additional equipment and multiplayer expansion ahead of its rapidly-approaching one year anniversary on Nov. 29. Monster of the Deep is available through the PlayStation Store for $29.99.
