Ubisoft Unveils Mythological Gods and Monsters at E3 2019

Today during Ubisoft’s E3 conference, the team behind Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey debuted their new action RPG title Gods and Monsters. The new game is based on the myths and legends of ancient Greece and is a byproduct of the extensive research that went into making Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, but with the freedom of not having to be practical or historically accurate.

Gods and Monsters is an open world action-oriented role-playing adventure game, and the idea is your hero’s exploits are being told by Homer, the iconic blind poet associated with the larger-than-life heroes of mythological Hellenistic Greece, to his grandchildren.

During the E3 conference, Ubisoft showed off a cinematic trailer for the new title. The animated art direction lends itself easily to the fantastical monsters and myths that will make up the game’s universe and is similar in design to another visually stunning action RPG, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the Nintendo Switch.

In Gods and Monsters, players take control of the protagonist Fenyx, a long-forgotten hero charged with the task of restoring power to the ancient Greek Pantheon. The gods were robbed of their powers by Typhon, a dangerous mythological figure and the game’s Big Bad.

While playing Gods and Monsters, you’ll pilot Fenyx and traverse the Isle of the Blessed, proving your worth by doing battle with myriad fantastic creatures that will be familiar to any student of Greek tales like the Odyssey and the Iliad. Fenyx faces off against Cyclopses (or should is be “Cyclopes”?), Harpies, and Gorgons using powers gifted from the gods that sit on Mount Olympus. These powers will come in very handy as Fenyx conquers dungeons and trials on the quest to restore the power of the Pantheon.

Is it a good thing to help the gods? In Greek mythology, the gods are definitely not always good. It will be very interesting to see how the power dynamics come into play in the story of Gods and Monsters.

Ubisoft’s action RPG Gods and Monsters is set to release on February 25, 2020 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Google Stadia. The “most premium” edition of Gods and Monsters will also be available via Ubisoft’s Uplay+.

Angel Tuohy: I'm a fan of a lot of different games in different genres, and my favorites are Dark Souls, Final Fantasy, Street Fighter, Tekken, Persona, Resident Evil, and NieR. I think games are a brilliant way to tell a story, but it's important to me that the game is fun to play too. I've recently received my Master's degree in Literature.
