Tropico 5’s First DLC, The Big Cheese, Available Now

“The Big Cheese,” the first DLC for Kalypso Media’s Tropico 5, lets your dictator turn his hand toward the more domestic as you try to make the best cheese in the world.

As anyone who has ever played a game in the Tropico series can tell you, Kalypso Media’s flagship series is about far more than simply ruling over your peoples with an iron fist. The games have always had a heavy influence on humor, sometimes dark, sometimes inane, and “The Big Cheese,” Tropico 5’s first (of several expected) DLC pack embraces that element strongly, providing players with a combination of humor and challenge as they strive to compete in the international cheese market.

Everyone loves cheese, right? Well, apparently El Presidente does, because in a surprise turn of events he has decided that the islands need to start producing their own cheeses. Who needs fancy schmancy import cheeses when you can produce your own goat and llama milk varieties right at home? Of course, with new manufacturing processes come new challenges, and in the fickle world of gourmet cheese, the slightest mistake can mean financial ruin.

‘The Big Cheese’ DLC, available today, challenges players to create and promote an artisan cheese brand by introducing a new production chain with the Creamery: a new building that enables you to make the most of Tropico’s local goats and llamas. Face international competition in an epic quest to create the best cheese in the world and put on the chef’s hat!

Features of the new DLC pack include:

  • New standalone scenario: “The Big Cheese” – Create and promote an artisan cheese brand
  • New building: The Creamery – Produces cheese from milk
  • New dynasty avatar accessory: The Chef’s Hat
  • New sandbox map: Arco Iris Beneditas
  • New music track: Eclecto-Hijinx Orchestra – Amiga

“The Big Cheese” isn’t the only new addition to Tropico 5 to be released, however. In addition to the game’s first DLC, Kalypso Media have also released a major update to the game. The 1.04 update brings players a whole heaping pile of improvements and additions to the game, most notably the inclusion of multiplayer saves.

So what are you waiting for? Both “The Big Cheese” and Tropico’s 1.04 update are available now, from either Steam or, for owners of the non-Steam version of Tropico 5, Kalypso Media’s own web site for  £2.49/€2.99/$3.99. Players who pre-ordered the game on Steam have no need to pay anything at all, since “The Big Cheese” will be made available to them as part of their pre-order bonus content.
