Trine, the Mac, Linux, PC, and Playstation Network action platformer, sold 6 million copies since its release in 2009. Yesterday, Helsinki, Finland-based Frozenbyte, the game’s developer, paid back loyal PC-owning fans by releasing Trine Enchanted Edition, an update of the original.

The remake will also be available for Mac, Linux, Playstation 4, and Wii U later this year. Frozenbyte CEO Lauri Hyvärinen said this was due to numerous requests to see the updated version on consoles. Those who own a PC copy of Thrine will receive the updated version for free, and still be able to play the original.

Trine Enchanted Edition, will utilize the newer Trine 2 engine. The game received, according to a release by the game’s developer, “dazzling new visual effects.” Online multiplayer is now available for the game, as well as up to three player local co-op. Mid-level saving will be implemented in “Enchanted” as well. There are also several gameplay tweaks and bug fixes.

Trine Enchanted Edition, involves the adventures of three heroic characters: a wizard, knight and, ironically, thief. Their goal is to save their kingdom after the king dies with no successors, leaving its citizens to leave in droves and undead evil to settle in. Interactive physics are a focal point of gameplay. It is a side scroller with enemy combat and seasoned the dangers omnipresent in most dungeon-esque platformers.

Each character has a different set of abilities to assemble unique strategies in combat. The game features puzzles, solvable with differing play styles. There are a cumulative 15 levels, each designed uniquely with a multitude of challenges for the player to surmount.

Frozenbyte released a trailer in concert with the updated original, found below. The game will be available on Steam, GOG.com, and Humble Store for $14.99. A sequel for Trine is also available for PC, Mac, Linux, PSN, XBLA, and WiiU’s eShop, titled Trine 2.
