Earlier today, the PlayStation store featured a game available for pre-order and set to release on September 2, 2022 titled The Last of Us Part I. While some speculate the leak to be an accident; however, Naughty Dog, the developer of The Last of Us series, released an extensive press release surrounding the leak and the new The Last of Us HBO show today that most likely was not last second. According to Naughty Dog, The Last of Us Part I is a remake of the PS3 original, that will also include new a multi-player experience and the 2014 DLC for The Last of Us, Left Behind. The Last of Us remake will be available for both PS5 and PC.
Naughty Dog listed this as their reason for a remake of a game that’s less than 10 years old:
With leaps in technology and hardware that allow us to push the limits of the visual fidelity and interactivity, we’re thrilled to announce this complete remake of The Last of Us…We’ve implemented modernized gameplay, improved controls, and expanded accessibility options in this single-player experience to allow even more individuals to enjoy the game. Effects, exploration, and combat have all been enhanced. Leveraging the PS5’s powerful hardware, we also implemented 3D Audio*, haptics, and adaptive triggers. Both returning fans and new players alike will have the opportunity to experience both The Last of Us Part I and its prequel story Left Behind in a whole new way.
Naughty Dog is releasing The Last of Us Part I in three editions: Standard, Digital Deluxe, and Firefly. In the Standard Edition, players will be able to play the base game with no additional benefits, selling at $69.99. For $10 more ($79.99), the Digital Deluxe Edition will feature the benefits of an early unlock of the following items:
- Increased Crafting Speed Skill
- Increased Healing Speed Skill
- 9mm Reload Speed Increase Upgrade
- Rifle Clip Capacity Increase Upgrade
- Explosive Arrows Gameplay Modifier
- Dither Punk Filter

For $99.99 and only available via direct.playstation.com, the Firefly Edition will contain the “early unlock bonuses featured in the Digital Deluxe Edition as well as a SteelBook® display case and The Last of Us: American Dreams Comics #1 to #4 with new cover art for each comic.” Lastly, if one pre-orders any edition, one will receive “Bonus Supplements to upgrade your skillset” and “Bonus Weapon Parts to upgrade your arsenal”.
