The Developers Behind Dungeons & Dragons, D&D Beyond, Magic: The Gathering, & Duel Masters Form A New Union Within Wizards Of The Coast

Earlier this year, the developers behind Magic: The Gathering Arena announced their intention and formed a union with CWA. Today, the Dungeons & Dragons team (Dungeons & Dragons, D&D Beyond) and Studio X (Magic: The Gathering, Duel Masters) have announced their intent to form a new union as part of United Wizards of the Coast-CWA, joining the MTG Arena team.

” We’re proud to follow in the footsteps of MTG Arena’s own union, who recently won their union election, and have worked with the MTG Arena union in preparation for today,” the D&D and Studio X team wrote in an open letter. “Now, we get to share it with you all!

“We are stewards of our games who deserve to be treated with all the respect and dignity that entails. And as the teams responsible for so much of Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast’s profits, we deserve the following:

  • Wages that reflect our work and defined career progression,
  • Job security against mounting industry instability,
  • Reliable and easily accessible healthcare for us and our families,
  • Sustainable workloads and practices, including remote and hybrid working,
  • Protection against the encroachment of AI,
  • Full ownership of the work we create outside of the office,
  • And additional needs outlined in our individual units’ goals.”

CWA District 7 Vice President Susie McAllister said: “With the holiday season right around the corner, it’s crucial that the labor movement continues to uplift and stand in solidarity with the tabletop workers behind the games we all get to enjoy with our chosen communities, who are fighting for layoff protections, guardrails against AI usage, and transparency in the workplace between workers and management,”  “Like the workers before them at MTG Arena, CWA looks forward to supporting these workers as they undergo their campaign for voluntary recognition and union representation towards a better workplace.”

The teams have given management a deadline of October 13, 2026, to voluntarily recognize their union. Workers have also filed an election petition with the  National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) to ensure a timely certification process.
