Tetsua Nomura Says Stranger of Paradise Sequel Possible if Popularity is High Enough

Strangers of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins is definitely one of the more interesting titles that Square Enix has come out with in recent years. The Final Fantasy spin-off, which is also a modern retelling of the background for the original title, received a mixed reception when it released in March 2022. Still, the title has garnered dedicated fanbase, which Producer Tetsua Nomura has recognized. Nomura recently made a statement on the Strangers of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins Different Future live event, saying “If word of mouth about the game spreads through the DLC’s completion, proving that this is a title that has really resonated with everyone, there may be a time when we can meet again.”

The statement, which was translated by Noisy Pixel, essentially means that the only way they’ll consider potential sequel is if the demand/popularity is there for it. Despite the growing appreciation for the title and what the development team was going for, it didn’t do too terribly well in terms of overall sales. In its native Japan, it was the fourth worst-selling Final Fantasy spin-off title to ever release in the nation’s history. Considering that there have been numerous different Final Fantasy title spin-offs over the course of 30-plus years, that’s not a terribly good distinction to have.

On top of all that, Square Enix’s more recent planning and development has been more geared to what they consider to be popular and what will increase their overall revenue. This was made very evident when the company sold several of its prominent first-party studios to the Embracer Group in Spring 2022, for what was considered at the time to be fairly less-than-valued price range. For the time being, Strangers of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins will continue to be supported, as it has a planned DLC release for today with Different FutureAs for the supposed sequel, only time will tell if the company sees a demand for it.
