One of the most controversial and infamous video games ever made is finally getting re-mastered for modern consoles, and, turns out, its really not as violent as moral guardians originally made it out to be. The campy, cult classic Sega CD full-motion video game Night Trap is getting a surprise 25th anniversary re-release on PS4 and Xbox One. Published by Screaming Villains, the restored interactive B-movie is slated for a spring release with a physical version available for PS4, as seen in the brand new trailer.
According to report made by Polygon, Limited Run Games is handling the physical release, with three different covers available, in reference to the original U.S. Sega CD releases of the game.
The last time anyone mentioned a re-release for Night Trap was during its unsuccessful Kickstarter campaign $330,000 back in 2014. The price for the new game has not yet been announced.
For those unfamiliar with the game, Night Trap puts players in the role of a secret agent monitoring a booby-trapped suburban house where previous teenage girls have disappeared. It turns out the house is crawling with vampires, and its up to the player to activate the traps at the right time to capture these monsters and save the girls.
The campy horror game ended up raising some major controversy back in 1993 due to its violent and “sexual” content, which ultimately lead to Senate hearings on violent video games and the game being pulled from store shelves. It was also cited as one of the major causes behind the creation of the ESRB in 1994. Though the original game was given a Mature rating after the creation of the ESRB, the 25th anniversary release was reduced to Teen.
Its a much more appropriate rating for a campy horror game that’s more akin to movies like Night of the Comet than The Evil Dead.
