Surf On Colorful Shapes in Zero G in Spectrum Break

Spectrum Break is an interesting new indie title worth watching. It is at its core a platformer, where you play as a little red surfer, cruising his way along a path of colorful blocks. But unlike most platformers, the goal is not simply to get from point A to point B. In Spectrum Break, the idea is to light up all of the blocks by touching them, or forcing them to touch each other.

This gameplay style creates a sort of puzzle in zero G, where the player jumps from block to block and causes the map to shift around themselves as they do. Jumping on top of one will push it down, while banking off the side will push it in that direction. However the game gets more complex as come blocks are attached and will behave differently when you collide with them.

The gameplay is almost difficult to explain without context, so check out this short trailer for a better idea of what the game looks like:

It’s an interesting idea to ask players to not only reshape the level as they play, but to make that the primary objective. Each level is unique and has multiple solutions, so players are encouraged to find their own strategies. The game also has a feature where a player can zoom out to view the entire level at once and get a fuller picture of what they might be dealing with.

This is the first game for developer Jason Hein who may be one to watch in the indie scene going forward. Spectrum Break drops on March 29 on Steam. You can keep an eye on the game’s website for more updates.
