According to GameReactor, the planned price for the PlayStation 5 was “considerably” more expensive than the announced price for the Xbox Series X. Sony has yet to reveal release date or price for the PlayStation 5, but Microsoft confirmed both, with the Xbox Series X being released on November 10th with a $499 price tag. They also confirmed the price of their smaller console, the Xbox Series S, which will be released on the same day with a $299 price tag. GameReactor has claimed to have an inside source who says that Sony is now adjusting their plans in response to the news. Apparently their planned price for the PlayStation 5 has now been cut to remain competitive with Microsoft.
GameReactor’s reported price is $399 for the discless PlayStation 5, and $499 for the disc port version of the console. If this holds true, the cheapest option would wind up being the Xbox Series S. Keep in mind this is all unconfirmed, and this information is said to have come from an “anonymous source.” This may be a blessing disguised for Sony though because if they were in fact eyeing a price far above Microsoft’s, it’s probably for the best that they kept it to themselves. This way they can take in this information like they have and make adjustments to stay in the next-generation console race.
It’s unknown exactly when Sony will share the launch window and price point for the upcoming PlayStation 5, though many speculate this information to come soon. They have already begun taking requests to be a part of a private preorder program on the PlayStation website. Those chose will get the opportunity to preorder the PlayStation 5; however, public preorders are not yet available.
