God of War Laufey has been a highly anticipated addition to the God of War franchise and a game that fans were hyped about. The game was originally scheduled to release on February 16, 2027, but today the developers announced that they are delaying the launch date to May 20, 2026.
Santa Monica Studio officially posted the announcement on their X and Instagram accounts. Their post highlighted that the reason for the delay was to further polish the game, bringing out its full potential to resonant with the players as their previous titles in the franchise.

For those unfamiliar with the newest addition to the franchise, God of War Laufey centers around Faye‘s journey as she wakes up after her own funeral in the Everywhen. The game will feature a female protagonist, known as the most powerful protector of the Giants and a remarkable warrior. She is also Kratos’ late wife and Atreus’ mother.
This shift in protagonist is a first for the franchise as God of War titles have always followed Kratos as he takes down god after god. News of Laufey as the main protagonist has received mixed responses from the public. There are fans excited to learn more about her and journey through this new adventure with her.
Some negative responses have revamped the title to “God of Laundry” or “God of Woke.” Despite these comments, the developers continue to work hard on Laufey’s story and their passion has shined through since the title’s announcement back in June. In the game, players will have to fight through gods of the afterlife to save the ones she loves.
God of War Laufey shows that love does not end after death and some stories truly do begin in the afterlife. The Everywhen is a land overflowing with dangerous magic, affecting even Faye’s power, and contains gods across mythology that crave that power for themselves. Her journey may have been delayed, but Laufey will awaken in May.
