Sony Earnings Report Shows Strong Demand For PlayStation 5

Sony has announced its 2022 Q4 earnings report today which shows that it’s now sold 38.4 million PlayStation 5 consoles since launching back in November 2020. Sony also sold record amount for the quarter with 6.3 million PlayStation 5 consoles. In 2022 alone 19.1 million units of the console were sold. During a press briefing on the results, Sony Group President Hiroki Totoki stated, ”We can now deliver PlayStation 5 to almost anywhere in the world without keeping our customers waiting.”

The report indicates that the supply chain issues that plagued the PlayStation 5 when it launched and suffered for well over year are largely diminished with more consoles readily available. Sony indicates for the current fiscal year between April 2023 to March 2024, they estimate to sell 25 million consoles, totaling over 63 million units all together. Compared with the PlayStation 4 in the same time frame, it sold nearly 60 million consoles.

When it comes to revenue from games themselves, numbers remained strong but were slightly down, as Bloomberg reported, “The delayed adoption of the PS5, which launched in late 2020 but has been limited by production challenges, is showing signs of hampering Sony’s ability to monetize the hardware through higher-margin software and subscriptions. Game sales in the latest quarter were down to 68 million units from 70.5 million in the same period a year earlier.”

PlayStation Plus gained one million subscribers between January to March 2023 totaling to 47.4 million, whereas PlayStation Network saw monthly active users up from 106 million to 108 million. PlayStation Plus has never gone above 50 million subscribers.

Sony has yet to indicate the sales of the PSVR2 which it recently released in February. There have been numerous reports spelling out dismal sales for the expensive headset, that Sony overestimated the amount of units it would sell at release and would bring in any profit unless Sony lowers the price on the hardware.
