Shovel Knight Surpasses 2.5 Million Units Sold as it Celebrates its 5 Year Anniversary

The acclaimed 2D platformer Shovel Knight has passed another sales milestone. In honor of the game recently celebrating its five year anniversary, Yacht Club Games announced that the game has surpassed 2.5 million units sold across all platforms in a celebratory post on their website. The game passed two million units sold back in April of last year, so an additional 500,000 units being sold in a little over a year, especially five years in, is a massive accomplishment.

Shovel Knight originally released back in June of 2014, and has received a plethora of new content since then. Yacht Club Games now considers the game to be “the Shovel Knight Saga” as there are multiple campaigns now for people to play and experience. The first three campaigns, the original now known as Shovel of Hope, Plague of Shadows, and Specter of Torment, can be purchased together as Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove. Additionally there are two more parts of the Shovel Knight Saga on the way, the first is another campaign called King of Cards and the other is a multiplayer fighting game called Shovel Knight: Showdown. There’s even board game based on the game on its way.

In addition to sharing the game’s sales milestone, Yacht Club Games decided to share tons of “WIP images, group photos, and weird things that got posted in our Slack from the last 5 years.” Some things shared include design documents, photos from the game’s first appearance at PAX East 2013, and even a design of Shovel Knight using his tongue to eat a fly that unfortunately didn’t make it into the Battletoads crossover.
