Shadow of the Tomb Raider Has Officially Been Unveiled by Square Enix

Winner of various awards, the rebooted Tomb Raider series has been met with massive success over its past few years. As a result, eager fans have been dying to learn when the next game in the series will be released. In a surprising turn of events, earlier today, the next installment into the Tomb Raider reboot series, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, was announced via a trailer.

The new Tomb Raider, headed by Eidos-Montreal and Crystal Dynamics, and published by Square Enix, will take players on a brand new, deadly journey through the ancient jungles of the Maya. In the trailer, we can see that there are new enemy factions to encounter, new gear to use, and a brand new environment to explore and mess around in. We also see a change in Laura Croft that is a stark contrast to her origins in the original 2013 reboot, Tomb Raider. It appears that the tomb raider, while struggling with a new journey, is also worried about the person that she is becoming after the previous adventures that she has been through. Laura even states that she is “afraid of what [will she] become” in the trailer.

The actual story of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, while still shrouded in some mystery, will involve Laura Croft trying to stop a Maya apocalypse from destroying the world. While dispatching various enemies, Laura will be forced to find out more about herself through her perilous journey to not only save the world, but to also become the tomb raider she was destined to be.

“Thanks to [the studio’s] incredible expertise, knowledge of the franchise and outstanding creativity, Eidos-Montréal, in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics, is delivering a powerful experience with Shadow of the Tomb Raider,” said Yosuke Matsuda, president and representative director of Square Enix Holdings Co., Ltd. in the press release. “Shadow of the Tomb Raider will take the series to new heights and Lara Croft to new depths.” David Anfossi, Head of Studio at Eidos-Montreal, also added that “Shadow of the Tomb Raider will challenge Lara Croft in new and unexpected ways. Our team has created a diverse set of skills, combat techniques and equipment for players to master, and they’ll certainly need them if they hope to survive the deadly jungle environments and tombs.”

Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be available for the Xbox One family (including the Xbox One X) as well as the PlayStation 4 and the PC on September 21 of 2018. Pre-orders of the title are already up for purchase which range from a Standard Edition for $59.99 to a Ultimate Edition for $199.99. Details on each edition and their respective platform counterparts can be viewed on the official pre-order page.
