Science Kombat: The World’s Greatest Thinkers Go Head-to-Head in This Brazilian Fighting Game

Well, not all of the world’s greatest thinkers. That would just be presumptuous.

But the fact of the matter is: who knew that the world needed a fighting game where you play as some of history’s most influential scientists? Superinteressante Magazine’s Science Kombat is coming to remind us that yes, we do indeed need this game, and it can be more than just an amusing gimmick, too.

The Brazilian popular science magazine announced on Thursday that they would be making Science Kombat as a “tribute to old video games and to the greatest scientists of history.” The game will feature eight playable scientists and a final boss. Similar to early incarnations of the Street Fighter series, each character has 6 basic attacks and 2 special attacks.

According to a statement made by Science Kombat’s animator, Diego Sanches, the intent of the game is to “make a link between the ‘powers’ of each character and his or her discoveries and inventions.”

And Mr. Sanches has proven his ability to do so beautifully. You can check out some of Science Kombat’s fluid spritework in this link.

This human evolution-themed move resembles the Flash Combos from Capcom’s Pocket Fighter.

A subtle nod to Demitri’s Demon Cradle from Capcom’s Darkstalkers series?

The game’s lineup includes Albert Einstein, Pythagoras, Marie Curie, Sir Isaac Newton, Nikola Tesla, Charles Darwin, and Stephen Hawking. The final boss, known as The Divinity, seems to be an amalgamation of various religious icons. Perhaps a didactic statement is being made here?

So far, there is no set date for Science Kombat’s launch. In the meantime, those interested in keeping up on project updates can do so by subscribing to its newsletter, via this link.
