Based on the iconic horror survival game in 1998, Resident Evil 2, released in 2019, provides a richer narrative built entirely from the ground up. Using Capcom’s RE ENGINE, the game was released with better audio, enhanced graphics, and modernized controls. In 2023, Resident Evil 2 became the bestselling video game in the Resident Evil franchise’s 27-year history, making over 12.6 million sales across console and PC. The game has consistently produced glowing reviews since its original launch in 2019, and its influence is likely to grow as it expands onto new platforms.
Resident Evil 2 follows inexperienced police officer Leon S. Kennedy and college student Claire Redfield as they make their way to Raccoon City. They discover a deadly virus, which has plunged the entire city into anarchy. The narrative is strikingly intense and has made its name in history for a reason. Even those familiar with the 1998 version have something to gain from experiencing Resident Evil 2’s remake, as it offers a new over the shoulder camera and a more in-depth storyline.
Capcom recently announced that Resident Evil 2 would be arriving to Apple’s latest devices on December 10, 2024. The game’s transition to iOS, iPadOS and macOS, was originally revealed during the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), alongside Resident Evil 7 Biohazard’s mobile adaptation. At the time, Resident Evil 2 was still under development and specific details were left vague. Capcom recently confirmed that the game would be available for purchase on December 10, however, and with an entirely free demo. Players will be able to progress through their playthrough across multiple devices, as iPhone, iPad, and Mac, will all transfer save data.
Capcom announced the official release date to fans via a post on Resident Evil 2’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on November 13. The post informs potential players that the game will only run on iPhone 16 models and iPhone 15 pro models, excluding the majority of Apple’s 24 iPhone generations. As more and more AAA titles make their way to the new lineup of iPhones, some players might consider upgrading their mobile devices.
For those who do own iPhones that are compatible with Resident Evil 2, players are invited to play a portion of the story for free before paying for the entire experience as an in-app purchase. As of now the game’s exact price has not been officially announced, but it will likely cost between $19.99 and $59.99, based on the app store’s previous Resident Evil titles. With a December 10 release date, it looks like Resident Evil 2 will arrive just in time for the holidays!
