The developers of the Taiwanese psychological horror game, Detention, are back with another title of the same genre. Red Candle’s previous game, Detention, was a surprise hit when it released, with many praising its fantastic atmosphere and realistic depictions of the historical context during that time period. The studio’s second game once again goes back to its roots in Taiwan, but this time set in the 1980s.
The official reveal for Devotion was announced via a teaser trailer that set the tone for the game, though actual details regarding gameplay and plot were absent from the video. The trailer starts out with a series of commercials that harkens back to the 80s, and then transitions into a broadcast of an old Taiwanese variety show. The camera slowly pans out to reveal a television that has been left on, followed by what appears to be an abandoned and dilapidated living room. Given that the studio is known for its portrayals of psychological horror steeped in Taiwanese history, the tone set by the trailer is essentially in line with its previous project.
On its website, Red Candle Games describes Devotion as a first-person 3D exploration game, a departure from the 2D side scrolling of Detention. Gamers must solve puzzles while exploring an apartment complex that once belonged to a family of three. Set in the 80s, religion plays a huge part in the thematic significance of the game. Within the confines and horrors of the house, each puzzle brings players closer to solving the mystery. According to the developers, the sound design for the game is heavily influenced by Taiwanese folk culture (Taoist mantra/ritual music), and the artstyle painstakingly recreates the lifestyle of a 1980s Taiwanese household.
Neither release date nor news of supported platforms has been given. But judging from the critical acclaim of Detention, players are in for another immersive deep dive into the memories and cultural psyches of the land where the developers call home.
