Sony has dedicated a special spotlight on seven different indie titles that will be making their way to the PlayStation home consoles. Dubbed the PlayStation Indies, this digital event showcased each title and how innovative they were in terms of accessibility, and overall playability. The event was presented by the Head of Independent Developer Initiative Shuhei Yoshida, who is also the former President of Sony Interactive Entertainment from 2008 to 2019, and has a longstanding support for independent developers and projects. We’re going to briefly go over all seven indie titles that were announced for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
First up was Operation Tango, where you can play as two different unique agents in order to save the world. When playing with a friend, you’ll have to utilize a working microphone in order to fully communicate, as one agent does the field work while the other one is a hacker that ensure the players success. The game was originally announced for Steam last year with a release time frame for Spring of this year, and according to the developer, the title will also launch for the PlayStation 5 around the game time.
Next was wonderfully charming title called Chicory: A Colorful Tale. The player, which takes the form of a cute dog, must restore color to the world with a unique paintbrush. Everything in this game looks like it came straight out of a coloring book, which only adds to the overall charm and look. According to the developer, the game will also take advantage of the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller by utilizing the touchpad in order to draw easier. Chicory: A Colorful Tale is slated to launch this Spring for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
Up next was the aptly named Nour: Play With Your Food, a game that combines music with food on a dinner table. This interesting title is essentially an interactive soundtrack, where the player plays with their food on the table, while the music changes depending on their interaction. It’s a nice twist that could lead to some very humorous results. Nour: Play With Your Food will launch this Summer for the PlayStation 5.
Where the Heart Leads is a story-driven title that can be changed through the past, present, and the future. The player will have to choose between specific dialogue options that can have severe consequences, and life-altering moments. The game will have numerous endings, as each choice is woven into the final path that the player takes. Where the Heart Leads will launch this year on July 13 for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
Puzzling Places is the first PSVR title to be featured here, and this game takes the term “puzzles” to a whole different level. As opposed to putting a normal jigsaw puzzle together on a table, the player will instead enter the world of VR and put together actual landscapes piece by piece. Every tiny puzzle piece is at the players finger tips, and depending on how large the puzzle, it could take a while to figure it out. Puzzling Places will release for PSVR this Winter.
Another puzzle-based game, Heavenly Bodies is about using solving psorblems in space with severe and dire consequences should you fail. The DualSense controller’s haptic feedback is mainly utilized here by carefully moving the astronauts bodies around the platforms, as well as inside them in order to fix space stations. One misstep and you’ll float off into the deep recess of space. Like one of the earlier titles, this game was initially revealed last year, but this new gameplay trailer gives us a whole new look at what we can expect. Heavenly Bodies will launch later this year for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.
Last, but certainly not least, was a bit of a surprise. ZA/UM’s critically acclaimed Disco Elysium will be making its way to the PlayStation home consoles, specifically, the definitive edition dubbed Disco Elysium: The Final Cut. This version will include brand new quests, new dialogue options, and some new quality of life improvements. The game was previously a PC exclusive title, releasing in 2019 to numerous accolades and a plethora of Game of the Year awards. The icing on the cake is that Disco Elysium: The Final Cut will launch on March 30 for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, which is less than two weeks away.
