Overwatch League Announces Seoul Dynasty

Yesterday was a big day for news in the Overwatch League. Team Seoul has become the sixth franchise to announce its name and branding, and the immediate contenders will be known as the “Seoul Dynasty.”

“We’ve put a lot of thought into choosing the right name to represent Seoul and its place in history as the birthplace of modern-day esports,” says Dynasty CEO and founder Kevin Chou. The name has a double meaning: it’s a reference to the Joseon Dynasty, which made Seoul the capital; and a nod to the word “dynasty” used in sports to refer to a team that has won many consecutive championships—like today’s Golden State Warriors or New England Patriots. It’s a worthy name, considering the players that make up the Seoul Dynasty.

The Dynasty are really the previous roster of Lunatic-Hai, the famed South Korea team that won back-to-back APEX seasons and is generally regarded as the best team on the planet. The lineup includes DPS players “EscA,” “Fleta,” “Munchkin,” and “Gido”; main tank “Miro”; supports “tobi” and “ryujehong”; and pure flex players “zunba” and “xepheR.” Going into the season, this is absolutely the team to beat.

Overwatch is going through some massive changes in anticipation of the Overwatch League preseason, including some sweeping changes to the spectator tools and broadcasting experience. The Seoul Dynasty now joins the Los Angeles Valiant, Boston Uprising, Shanghai Dragons, San Francisco Shock, and Dallas Fuel as the first six franchises to be announced. Look for the other six to be revealed within the coming week or two.
