The 14th iteration of Momocon has come to a close, and plans for Momocon 2019 have already begun. Now that the event is over, it has been revealed that this year, Momocon was once again a success with over 35,000 people attending the convention according to a press release provided to mxdwn Games.
The massive turnout is due to the stacked events that Momocon 2018 had for its patrons. During the convention, Suda51 made a massive reveal to the world with the HD remake of Killer7. In addition to celebrating AAA games over the weekend, people also celebrated the achievements of indie game developers with the Indie Game Awards Showcase. For this awards show, 20 finalists were selected to have a chance at winning $1,000, a highlight in the Momocon newsletter, and a free exhibit space and panel at Momocon 2019. 5 winners were selected from the pool of 20, and the winners of the Indie Game Awards Showcase are:
- SiNKR by Wahler Digital
- Door Kickers: Action Squad by PixelShard and KillHouse Games
- The Norwood Suite by Cosmo D
- Epic Tavern by Hyperkinetic Studios
- Mike Dies by Psydra Games
We would like to congratulate not only the winners of this prestigious event, but also all of the finalists who dedicated their time and energy into creating something that they are passionate about.
On the more competitive side of things, one of the big draws to Momocon each year are the dedicated Super Smash Bros. tournaments that are hosted each year. Once again this year, Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U were hosted at the event.
For Super Smash Bros. Melee, both singles and doubles were played. The event first finished the doubles tournament, and that came down to team La Luna and Colbol vs. team Wizzrobe and Mew2King. Although La Luna and Colbol fought their way through the loser’s bracket, they were bested by Wizzrobe and Mew2King in a decisive 1 – 3 loss, making Wizzrove and Mew2King the doubles champions of Momocon 2018. For Singles, the final four came down to Hungrybox, Mew2King, Wizzrobe, and Colbol. With Colbol and Mew2King finishing 4th and 3rd respectively, It was just down to Hungrybox and Wizzrobe in the grand finals. Hungrybox ended up making quick work of Wizzrobe, and took home 1st place in a 3 – 0 sweep.
For Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, singles and doubles were also played, and doubles finished up first as well. The final two teams ended up being team Fatality and komorikiri vs team Samsora and CaptainZack. The two teams went back and forth, and although it almost went to a bracket recent, Fatality and komorikiri ended up clutching it out to take home first place. For singles, the final four came down to Salem, Nairo, komorikiri, and Tweek. With Nairo and komorikiri taking home 4th and 3rd place respectively, both Tweek and Salem duked it out in the grand finals. Once again, the set went back and forth, but Tweek ultimately reigned supreme, and prevented a bracket recent and won 3 – 2.
“Every year, the turnout, support, and passion of the industry surprises me,” said Chris Stuckey, Co-Founder of MomoCon, in the press release. “I’m honored and privileged to be able to continue providing a place where we can recognize the talent in videogames and connect gamers with each other.”
Momocon 2019 might be a year away, but it will surely be yet another action-packed event just like this year and the previous years.
