November 2018 NPD: Red Dead Redemption II Lassos the Top Spot on the Chart

The November NPD numbers for video game sales in the U.S. have been revealed. The two best selling games of the year duked it out a second month in a row to see which would be the best selling game of the month. In the end, Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption II claimed the top spot for November.

After landing in second place during its debut month, Red Dead Redemption II had its strongest month yet. Rockstar’s Western epic was bolstered by the game receiving its multiplayer online mode towards the end of the month. The game has also sold more than the lifetime sales of the original Red Dead Redemption by almost 40%. While Red Dead Redemption II achieved the top spot this month, it is still the second best selling game of the year.

Last month’s number one, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 landed second for November. Despite this, the game is still the best selling game of the year at this time. However, Red Dead Redemption II is narrowing the gap between the two massive titles. This isn’t the only massive success Black Ops 4 is experiencing. It is currently the second fastest selling title in PlayStation 4 and Xbox One history only behind another entry in Activision’s massive franchise: last year’s Call of Duty: WWII.

Elsewhere on the list, EA’s Battlefield V reached third on the list despite its battle royale mode being delayed into 2019. Fallout 76 was the fourth best selling game of the month even with no digital sales for the game being reported and all the drama surrounding the game. The first major Pokemon games to come to the Nintendo Switch placed fifth and sixth respectively after the duo sold 3 million units combined worldwide in their first week on sale. The return of Spyro with the Spyro Reignited Trilogy placed ninth, and outsold all other games in the franchise combined by 30% during their respective launch months.

Below are the top 10 best selling games of November:

  1. Red Dead Redemption II
  2. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
  3.  Battlefield V
  4. Fallout 76
  5. Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!
  6. Pokemon: Let’s Go, Eevee!
  7. NBA 2K19
  8. Madden NFL 19
  9. Spyro Reignited Trilogy
  10. FIFA 19

On the hardware side of things, the Nintendo Switch usurped the PlayStation 4 as the best selling console of November. It is also the first time in the history of November that all three major consoles sold over 1 million units. The Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One each sold over 1.3 million units during the month.
