Niantic’s ‘Peridot’ Releases in May

Niantic has announced today that its new game Peridot will be released on iOS and Android on May 9th. The makers behind the massively successful mobile game Pokemon Go first announced Peridot a year ago. The mobile game is a pet sim where you raise and care for creatures called Dots. Peridot works in the style of Tamagotchi with a mashup of AR Pokemon Go features. Each Peridot will be unique based upon its own exclusive genetic makeup wherein no two Dots will be alike. Furthermore, players can go out into the world to find items for their Dot’s happiness and nests where they can breed their Dots with other players. When a Dot is bred, the egg Dot will inherit the personality traits and design style of their parent Dots. Players can go on to teach their Dots tricks, have them play with toys, dress them up, feed them, and raise them from egg to adult. Niantic also says that the Dots won’t die if you fail to care for them, rather rewarding you for checking in daily.

In the past few years Niantic has released other mobile games such as Pikmin Bloom in 2021 and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite back in 2019. Both games drew from the systems of Pokemon Go of players collecting items from the in-game map. However, the two games did not reach the level of success Pokemon Go has, and subsequently Harry Potter: Wizards Unite was shut down in January 2022. Time will tell whether users will adopt Peridot and stick with the mobile game akin to the success of Pokemon Go.

Currently, players can preregister for Peridot today on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Those who preregister and play during the first two weeks of Peridot’s launch will earn exclusive cosmetics for their Dots.
