Recently, multiple reports suggested that Nintendo’s sucessor to the Switch was delayed to Q1 2025. Now, the Japanese publication Nikkei is reporting that Nintendo is targeting to launch the ‘Nintendo Switch 2’ to be released in March 2025. The report also talks about the reasons for the delay.
The Switch 2 was planned to launch in late 2024 but according to Nikkei, “priority was given to ensure the initial inventory of the successor console and a lineup of software titles at the time of its launch” in an attempt to avoid widespread reselling. Nikkei has also corroborated several details that have been reported about the next Nintendo console in the past. Nintendo’s ‘Switch 2’ will be a hybrid portable- home device similar to the Switch. As reports have mentioned, this new machine will have a larger screen than the original Switch’s 6.2 display.
Earlier this month, Nintendo revealed that it had sold 13.74 million Switch units during the first nine months of the financial year, a 7.8% decline from the previous year. Nintendo has revised its forecast for the current financial year up, predicting Switch sales to 15.5 million, up from the 15 million that was predicted previously.
Nintendo says that Nintendo Switch sales “continued to be steady” in its seventh year since launch. Nintendo Switch has sold 139.36 million units, making it only behind the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation 2 as the best-selling consoles of all time. The Switch is still as popular now as it was when it first launched. There are more annual playing users than ever with 122 million players recorded during 2023.
Nikkei has noted that the ‘Switch 2’ launch could slip beyond March 2025, depending on manufacturing and how much software will be ready for launch.
