New Interview with Resident Evil 3 Remake Producer Reveals What Will Change from the Original

This week the Reddit user u/Mates20970 shared link on the r/residentevil Subreddit to scans of a recent interview Capcom producer Peter Fabiano gave to Official PlayStation Magazine UK on the upcoming survival horror sequel Resident Evil 3 Remake. The magazine scans are hosted on the image-sharing site Imgur by user jcs3994.

In the feature from Official PlayStation Magazine UK titled “Meet Your Nemesis (Again),” producer Peter Fabiano and the development team at Capcom answered questions about what would be new as well as what would be changed in the remade version of the original Resident Evil 3: Nemesis that released in 1999The interview goes over the additions that the team are adding to the title and also what will be absent from the PlayStation 4 remake.

In the original version of the game, multiple endings were possible depending on the choices the player made for Resident Evil series mainstay and S.T.A.R.S. hero Jill Valentine. The player had to make rapid decisions about how to progress throughout their playthrough by making “action choices” in the original version. When asked if Resident Evil 3 Remake will have the same variety in available endings, Fabiano gave a direct “no” as an answer as the development team at Capcom has decided to structure the game as a single, set narrative and for obvious reasons have not shared what will happen in the game’s new ending. As a consolation, Capcom has shared that the remade game will be expanded and features new story elements and different roles for the game’s characters. Also, the Capcom team confirmed that Carlos will be playable in Remake.

According to a writer on the development team at Capcom, another missing feature from the original Nemesis is Mercenaries mode. The mode as it was in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis was an unlockable mini game similar to the bonus modes that were recreated for Resident Evil 2 Remake and wasn’t as deep as its later iterations. This may seem like bummer, but Capcom is including the asymmetrical multiplayer game Project Resistance in Resident Evil 3 Remake in its place. Project Resistance is a very large multiplayer mode that was announced separately from Resident Evil 3 Remake in 2019.

Other noteworthy information from the interview includes comments on Nemesis himself–Nemesis in Resident Evil 3 Remake uses an enhanced version of the Tyrant’s (affectionately called Mr. X) AI in Resident Evil 2 Remake, and the development team created a true-to-size model of Nemesis to scan via photogrammetry technology to capture his likeness. Sound design is also integral to Resident Evil 3 Remake, and players will need to pay attention to sound cues to assess danger in the Raccoon City environments. On that note, the team confirmed in the interview that players will be able to explore various familiar locations, including the hospital, the press office, the Stagla gas station, and shops and streets in Raccoon City itself.

Resident Evil 3 Remake and the multiplayer spinoff Project Resistance will release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on April 3, 2020. Subscriptions to Official PlayStation Magazine UK are available here.

I think games are a brilliant way to tell a story, but it's important to me that the game is fun to play too. I've recently received my Master's degree in Literature.
