The Squid Game series has received immense success across the globe, becoming the most popular show on Netflix within the first six weeks following its premiere. Since then, its fans have eagerly awaited the upcoming release of its second season on December 26. The show’s new spinoff mobile game, Squid Game: Unleashed, launches a few days from now, on December 17, further increasing the excitement surrounding the second season’s arrival. The game is being developed by Netflix Game Studio and Boss Fight, and has been advertised to potential players since its August announcement at Netflix’s 2024 lineup.
The multiplayer battle royale mobile game is based on the Squid Game Netflix series, featuring iconic games from the show like Red Light, Green Light, Glass Bridge, Hell, The Men with the Umbrella, Stick to the Team, and more. Players control their own Squid Game contestant as they compete in live 32-player tournaments, earning virtual money with every win. Victories advance players to higher tiers and more advanced games.
As a Netflix game, it was assumed that players would require an active Netflix subscription to play the game. This was proven somewhat incorrect at Thursday’s Game Awards in Los Angeles, when Netflix announced that Squid Game: Unleashed would be available to everyone for a limited time. This means that players will have access to the game upon its release, regardless of whether or not they possess an active Netflix subscription. As with all Netflix Games, Squid Game: Unleashed will be entirely free of ads and in-game purchases.
According to Alain Tascan, President of Games at Netflix, “Squid Game is Netflix’s most watched series ever,” and he wants to celebrate its return “by making Unleashed available to everyone, which is a first for Netflix Games.” He explained that the game will let users play “with (or against) [their] friends in the iconic games from the series like Glass Bridge and Red Light Green Light.” Tascan looks forward to “inviting everyone into the chaos this holiday season.”
Netflix revealed gameplay footage and sneak peaks of Squid Game season 2 at The Game Awards when the series’ antagonistic pink guards stormed the stage, headed by their all-new black suited figure. The mysterious guard announced the arrival of Squid Game: Unleashed and declared that the game would temporarily be available to everyone, regardless Netflix subscriptions.
Squid Game: Unleashed will be available on iOS and Android devices on December 17. The game will be entirely free to download directly following its launch, and as Netflix has not yet revealed when this period of unlimited access will close, anyone interested should download the game as soon as possible. Pre-registration is currently available.
