Mundaun, a Hand Drawn Horror Game, to Release in March

If anyone is looking for a new horror game to play, Mundaun might be it. While it was announced last year, we finally got a release date yesterday. This game has been in the works since the fall of 2014, so it is exciting to hear that it will be coming out on March 16.

For those that might not have heard of it, Mundaun is a horror game set in the Swiss Alps created by the one-man studio, Hidden Fields. This is the first full-length game coming from the aforementioned studio, and one of its more interesting aspects is that it has a very unique art style. This texture was made by the creator of the game, Michel Ziegler, hand-stenciling all of the game’s graphics. Just from looking at the trailer, the effort put into the game’s graphics pays off in the moody, monotone atmosphere it portrays.

Mundaun follows the story of Curdin who travels to the city of Mundaun after the death of his grandfather and finds the town to be more than he bargained for. As he attempts to unravel the secrets of the town, players will encounter a fear system, similar to the gameplay mechanics used in Amnesia and Soma. This cause-and-effect based fear mechanic “disorients players when facing dangerous situations.”

Earlier today there was a Q&A session on the game’s discord with Michel Ziegler, and the discussion can still be read. Most of what was talked about was the inspiration behind the game and what the process of creating a hand-penciled game was like.

Mundaun will release on March 16 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. And for those who are interested in learning more about the process behind the making of Mundaun, Ziegler has released a short behind the scenes video detailing his unique art style.
