Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ Deep Dive Reveals a Persistent Combat Sandbox in Hajin

Infinity Ward has offered its most detailed look yet at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4‘s DMZ mode, revealing a persistent extraction-shooter experience built around the sprawling Hajin Exclusion Zone.

The official DMZ Deep Dive describes Hajin as a persistent, open-world combat environment where players loot, complete objectives, fight AI enemies and rival Operators, and attempt to extract with their rewards. Players can deploy alone or with a squad into the conflict zone, with the central objective of recovering valuable resources and military technology while attempting to survive the journey out. Hajin is designed to make every deployment unpredictable. Its various areas have individual Threat Levels that can increase when players make too much noise, triggering increasingly dangerous enemy responses. Players will encounter multiple types of AI forces, autonomous combat threats, vehicles and powerful commanders, while rival Operators provide an additional PvP threat.

Environmental conditions add another variable. Hajin contains a mixture of urban, rural, industrial and military locations, with major Points of Interest including the 14th Political Prison, Chang-san Air Base, Haneul Nuclear Reactor, NuriGO Mall, Songdo Wharf and Wolves Stadium. The variety of environments is intended to give players different approaches to exploration, combat and extraction rather than funneling every deployment through the same encounters. The mode’s persistent progression is equally important. Players return to a Forward Operating Base, which serves as their command center between deployments. The FOB evolves as players complete Operations across Hajin, eventually expanding to more than a dozen Stations for functions including managing Operators, storing equipment, testing weapons, crafting, purchasing gear and tracking progression. DMZ also has its own dedicated progression track running from Level 1 through Level 70.

Deployments can be approached in several ways. Players can pursue Story Missions, take on Dynamic Operations or enter Free Roam without a specific mission. Dynamic Operations can award DMZ Cash, XP and Supply Drops, while DMZ Orders provide structured objectives and help guide players through the mode’s systems and progression. After each deployment, an After Action Report evaluates the run, with ratings ranging from F to S++. With Modern Warfare 4 scheduled to launch on October 23, DMZ is shaping up as one of the game’s major pillars alongside Campaign and Multiplayer. Rather than functioning as another conventional multiplayer playlist, Hajin is being built as a persistent combat sandbox where exploration, PvPvE encounters, progression and the risk of losing a valuable run all feed into the same extraction loop.
