Blizzard Entertainment announced on Twitter that the next character addition to Heroes of the Storm will be Malthael the antagonist from Diablo III’s Reaper of Souls expansion. Malthael was considered for the game around the time of the Eternal Conflict Expansion but the studio decided to go with Leoric instead at the time.
Malthael’s profile on the Heroes of the Storm site outlines his abilities. He is an assassin class character whose abilities are based around the “Reaper’s Mark.” The Reapers Mark is a feature of 3 primary attacks. One of which is Death Shroud which unleashes a wave of dark mist that applies Reaper’s Mark to the enemies it hits. Another one, Wraith Strike allows Malthael to instantly teleport through an enemy afflicted by Reaper’s Mark. It deals 59 damage and also refreshes Reaper’s Mark. Soul Rip, his third primary ability allows him to extract the souls of enemies with the Reapers Mark dealing 100 damage to characters and also healing Malthael.
As for his heroic abilities, Tormented Souls, grants him armor and shoots out souls which affects anyone that touches them with the Reaper’s Mark. The second ability Last Rites, deals damage equal to 50% of the enemy’s missing health 2 seconds after the ability is activated. It also has a repeatable quest that allows the cool down time to be diminished to a minimum of 15 seconds.
Malthael was formerly the Archangel of Wisdom in the Diablo series. He was a key character in Diablo III and is determined to destroy anything corrupted by demons. He will be the 67th hero added to the Heroes of the Storm roster. An official release date has not been announced yet.
