Love and Deepspace Enforces Face Verification on Chinese Servers

Love and Deepspace is a popular free-to-play mobile game developed by Papergames and published globally by Infold Games in January 2024, the same team behind hugely successful franchises like the Nikki and Mr. Love series. Recognized as the first ever 3D otome (romance simulation) game, Love and Deepspace lets players interact with and date a variety of simulated men in a detailed sci-fi setting.

The game has been praised for its high-quality graphics, well written storylines, and creative integration of action-packed gameplay. Players interested in role playing elements can spend plenty of time customizing their original avatars with different, hairstyles, clothing items, and makeup looks. Love and Deepspace also includes a Remind Me feature, that functions like a calendar app affecting both the real world and the in-game world. Players can add an event or reminder and set a time for it in the game, which prompts the dreamy male romantic interests to notify the player when the day arrives. Love and Deepspace also integrated a period tracker into the Remind Me system on January 10, 2025, for users to keep track of their reproductive schedule.

In response to China’s increasingly strict ‘anti-addiction’ laws, Love and Deepspace plans on launching new face verification feature in April 2025. Originally revealed via Chinanews Shanghai, the news was later shared and translated to English in a Reddit post by user blueberryandvanilla. Once the verification feature is launched, players will have to pass a face verification test in addition to the game’s pre-existing real name and ID process. The face verification feature will offer the player five attempts before terminating the login process altogether. Minors under 18 will be refused access entirely, adhering to the Chinese Minors’ Protection Law. Love and Deepspace must implement this system in order to meet regulatory requirements and gain approval from the National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA).

Love and Deepspace in China will launch ‘face verification’ feature in April 2025. This feature adds an extra layer to the existing real-name authentication process.

Versions of Love and Deepspace outside of China should continue to function as normal. Anyone interested in giving the game a try can download it for free via the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

I am captivated by video games and how they function as a story telling medium. Mobile games, specifically, are increasingly complex forms of entertainment that can be played on the go. While many video games are available only to those who can afford expensive consoles and computers, mobile games are designed for the average person.
