League of Legends World Championship Kicks Off Today

The League of Legends Season 3 World Championship begins today at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Over the next three weeks, fourteen teams will compete for the $1 million first place prize, with another $1 million split among the other places.

The tournament brings together the top LoL teams from North America, Europe, and Asia. Though the Korean teams are the favorites to win there could be an upset like last year, when the little-known Taiwanese Taipei Assassins beat the dominant Russian Moscow 5 in the Season 2 World Championship finals.

The first week will consist of the group stages, where ten of the competing teams have been split into two groups of five and face off in a round robin-style bracket. The teams with the best Win/Loss records will move on. Four of the teams, Cloud 9 HyperX, Najin Black Sword, Royal Club, and the Gamania Bears, get a bye on the group stage and move straight to the quarter finals due to outstanding performance in regional qualifiers.
