Valve co-founder and one of the richest men on the planet, Gabe Newell, answered questions on Reddit yesterday ranging from the status of Half-Life 3 to his favorite Valve games and even to how he likes his steaks cooked (medium rare). As one can imagine, many gamers jumped at the chance to question the legendary video game developer. Here are some of the highlights of the Q&A.
One user, Baldemoto, had several questions, many of which were on most people’s mind. The first question he asked was, of course, about the status of Half-Life 3, as well as the possibility of a third episode for Half-Life 2. Newell immediately dodged the question by saying, “The number 3 must not be said.” That’s not to say that a new Half-Life is immediately out of the question, as his answer to the next question of whether or not there were anymore full-fledged single player games being developed by Valve was a resounding “Yes.” Baldemoto also brought up the recent news of the alleged Valve insider who claimed Half-Life 3 had been canceled. When asked about the legitimacy of this unidentified source, Newell remarked, “I personally believe all unidentified anonymous sources on the Internet.”
Another user, japasthebass, also asked if there would be any new games in the Half-Life/Portal universe, and Newell responded with a simple, “Yep,” further solidifying the possibility of Half-Life 3 as well as the possibility of a crossover game with Portal. Another Redditor asked about the supposed movie (or pair of movies) by J. J. Abrams that were supposed to take place in that universe, to which Newell responded with, “They’re coming.” That could mean a lot of lens flare, but if J. J. Abrams is helming the film, then fans could be looking at the first video game movie that doesn’t totally suck.
Another Redditor, RoboticChicken, asked Newell which Valve games were his personal favorite. Newell responded, “I think Portal 2 is our best single-player game. I play Dota 2 the most of our multiplayer games.” Another user joked that the entire Half-Life community died, so Newell decided to elaborate on his response:
The issue with Half-Life for me is that I was involved in a much higher percentage of the decisions about the games, so it’s hard for me to look at them as anything other than a series of things I regret. There’s no information in my response about what we’ll do in the future. It’s simply easier for me to be a fan of things that in which I was less directive.
Apparently, Newell is one of those people who are their own harshest critics. This could part of the reason why he’s been so reluctant to move forward on Half-Life 3. After all, there’s really no way one game can live up to more than ten years of hype, and Duke Nukem Forever can certainly attest to that.
There were also a few questions about Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Baldemoto asked how many people were currently working on CS:GO, remarking that many in the community were frustrated at the lack of updates and continued problems with bugs. Newell responded that there were about twenty to thirty people working on the game, the same as there had been before. When asked about how long until servers will be added to other parts of the world, such as Russia, Newell simply responded, “We’re adding servers all the time.”
So, the big takeaways from this Q&A are that new single player games still being developed by Valve, and one of them could take place in the Half-Life/Portal universe, as well as the J. J. Abrams movies still being developed. Hopefully, fans get a chance to see something new soon.
