Epic Games Acquires Rocket League Developer Psyonix

Earlier today, Psyonix, the studio behind the hit car soccer game Rocket League, announced that they have been acquired by Epic Games. The news came via a blog post on the official Psynoix website. According to the post, the acquisition is aimed to be closed by the end of the month or early June.

The announcement post also included a short Q&A portion to update fans on what will happen with the studio and Rocket League thanks to the acquisition. Nothing will really change for Rocket League. Psyonix will bring the game to the Epic Games Store on PC with the intention to “grow the game in ways we couldn’t do on our own before.”

It is currently unknown if the game will become an Epic Games Store exclusive upon release since Psyonix will be owned by Epic by that time. In the original post, it was mentioned that the game would be removed from Steam upon its release on the Epic Games Store. However, since then, Epic gave a statement to USGamer to clarify the initial comment. “We are continuing to sell Rocket League on Steam, and have not announced plans to stop selling the game there.” The statement would continue with, “Rocket League remains available for new purchasers on Steam, and long-term plans will be announced in the future.”

Psyonix would also give some hints at how the acquisition impacts the Rocket League eSports ecosystem. Most importantly, the acquisition “significantly increases our potential reach and resources” for the studio. The studio would also tease that their “future in esports to be very exciting — especially in the near future.” This specifically teasing at the Rocket League Championship Series Finals happening on June 7 in Newark, New Jersey.
