Square Enix has revealed a new wave of information about Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold, including its second new playable job, additional raid content, and major changes to the game’s combat and progression systems. However, players will have to wait a little longer to experience the expansion: its release has been moved from January 2027 to February 23, 2027. Announced during the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Tokyo on October 31, the revised schedule places early access on February 19, four days before the official launch. Preorders are scheduled to open November 4. Producer and director Naoki Yoshida explained that the additional development time will help the team deliver the expansion’s promised features and content.
The biggest new gameplay announcement is Zephyr, the second of two new jobs arriving with Evercold. A physical ranged DPS, Zephyr fights with a crossbow and works alongside an avian familiar named Nephele, combining ranged attacks with coordinated abilities and party support. Zephyr joins Bastion, the expansion’s previously announced tank job. Both new jobs will exclusively use the upcoming Evolved combat system, meaning players will not have the option to use the alternative Reborn mode with these characters. Square Enix also confirmed that Final Fantasy XIV has surpassed 35 million registered accounts worldwide. This is a cumulative registered-account figure, not a count of currently active subscribers.
One of the most consequential additions is Evolved Mode, a redesigned combat experience intended to emphasize the individual identities of the game’s jobs. Players can alternatively choose Reborn Mode, which retains the existing combat system. The expansion will introduce Fierce, a new raid difficulty positioned between Normal and Savage. Square Enix also revealed high-difficulty eight-player encounters featuring reworked bosses from existing Alliance Raids. Other major announcements include EVANGELION: Ghosts of Desire, a crossover Alliance Raid, and Beyond the Lifestream, a new raid series featuring a collaboration with the Final Fantasy VII Remake series. Additional features include the Seasons reward system, expanded character customization, Character Action Skins, housing improvements, PvP updates, and a revamped companion chocobo system.
Despite the volume of announcements, Evolved Mode remains one of the expansion’s biggest questions. The system could significantly change how familiar jobs feel, potentially giving returning players a reason to reconsider their combat experience. Square Enix has previously demonstrated Evolved Mode gameplay, but the Tokyo keynote did not provide the detailed new demonstration some players were hoping to see. Until players can examine the revised abilities and rotations more closely, it remains difficult to judge whether the overhaul will meaningfully improve the experience. With its February release date, new jobs, and extensive system changes, Evercold is shaping up to be a significant turning point for Final Fantasy XIV. Whether those changes bring back lapsed players will ultimately depend on how well the redesigned combat system works in practice.
