EA Seeks Fan Input on Plants vs. Zombies 3 Art Style

Plants vs. Zombies 3: Welcome to Zomburbia was the latest mobile installment in the hit Plants vs. Zombies series created by PopCap Games and published by Electronic Arts. Although the game was successfully released on January 17, 2024, EA decided to remove it from mobile app stores in October to make significant updates, including a potential overhaul of the game’s art style. In a September 2024 update, a concept artist named Ryan emphasized the influence of 1990s Saturday morning cartoons and asymmetrical designs as inspiration for a Plants vs. Zombies 3 artistic overhaul. His goal is to achieve more of a “Saturday morning cartoon vibe.”

EA decided to reach out for advice on possible art styles in their most recent and first blog post of 2025. They explain to readers that this year Plants vs. Zombies 3 is “highly focused on something fundamental to the Plants vs. Zombies series: the art style and direction.” The post asks readers to

1.Check out the three images below!

2. Share your thoughts about which Image # you prefer on social media using the hashtag #PvZ3

3.Tell us which style speaks to you the most and why!

EA emphasizes that user feedback is highly important to Plants vs. Zombies 3 and promises to “keep the community informed along the way.” In order to vote for their favorite art style, users are instructed to use hashtag #PvZ3 on social media to share their thoughts.

Plants vs. Zombies 3 also shared the three potential art styles via a post on the game’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating that they intend to take fans “on a journey with [them] behind-the-scenes as [they] re-imagine” the game. Users are encouraged to share their opinions on the art styles beneath the post in its comment section.

Although there is currently no official announcement regarding the relaunch date of Plants vs. Zombies 3, it appears that the game’s dev team will continue to post regular updates on its progress.

I am captivated by video games and how they function as a story telling medium. Mobile games, specifically, are increasingly complex forms of entertainment that can be played on the go. While many video games are available only to those who can afford expensive consoles and computers, mobile games are designed for the average person.
