If you’ve been looking forward to the end of November for Doom Eternal, we have some unfortunate news for you. The developers, id Sofware, posted an update on the title that addressed numerous changes. One of these changes is the release date, which has been officially delayed to March 20, 2020, nearly four months after it’s original launch date of November 22.
In the above tweet, the company states that the main reason for the delay is that the game needs to “live up to our standards of speed and polish.” It’s obvious that id Software doesn’t feel that Doom Eternal is ready for the public just yet. While this is a bit of a let down, as we were hoping to rip and tear our way through demons before Thanksgiving this year, it’s still better than releasing a buggy, messed up product.
It wasn’t all bad news though, as the company also had some new reveals in this post. The new Invasion mode, which allows players to sneak into other peoples games as demons and take down Doomguy, will be released as a free update sometime after the game’s initial launch. In addition to this, the Nintendo Switch port of the game is now slated to release sometime “after the other platforms” with no exact release date announced.
Finally, a cool and somewhat interesting reveal is that Doom 64, which was originally planned as a Switch only release, is now coming to all available platforms. On top of that, the game is being offered as a pre-order incentive for Doom Eternal, of course this also means that this game is being delayed as well. Either way, it’s nice way for a diehard fan of the series to have all of the essentials of the franchise in one nice collection.
Despite the game’s delay, we’re still excited and looking forward to blitzing our way through the confines of hell and all of the demons it houses. In hindsight, this gives us more time to digest other AAA titles that were releasing around the same time, such as Death Stranding, which launches on November 9. Doom Eternal looks absolutely stunning in what we’ve seen thus far, so if the team needs a little more time to work on it, we’re sure the wait will be worth it.
Doom Eternal will now launch on March 20, 2020 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, and Google Stadia.
